She unleashed a snarl with Strength in it.

Her will swirled in on Kiviuq.

She hurled her blade.

Kiviuq, being a shaman himself, felt her power like a whiplash across his back. Hunched as much in terror as in effort, he paddled with his breath gasping, his limbs burning. All the while, he wheezed his own little Strong songs, hoping to speed his escape.

He turned at one point, hearing strange noises behind him.

Alone, the ulu was there. Driven by the woman’s anger, it skipped and danced across the water.

The blade was alive. It was coming toward Kiviuq.

With every hop, the ulu seemed to cast up Sea spray. Up came walls of foam and water. Each wave was seven times higher than whatever had been sent up behind it. Great plumes of white now obscured the shore.

Worse, the Sea was freezing.

Everywhere the wrath of the woman touched the Sea— everywhere her ulu skipped—ice spread like a giant’s stamp on the water.

Still, Kiviuq was aided by his own songs.

Working like never before, he managed to outdistance the dancing ulu. At last, it seemed to tire. He turned in time to see it sink beneath the waves.

Yet the ice remained.

The Sea kept freezing. Solid whiteness even crept ahead of Kiviuq. His little qajaq was nearly trapped in the expanding ice. He struggled to find paths around icebergs that rose like great white blossoms.

He sang and he paddled. He used all of his knowledge.

At last, he slipped away.
